Promethazine Is In A Class Of Medications Called Phenothiazines.

It works by blocking the action of a certain natural substance in the body. Promethazine is highly protein-bound. It is widely distributed in body tissues and fluids, and it crosses the placenta and is excreted into breast milk. Promethazine is a phenothiazine that possesses antihistamine, sedative, anti-emetic, and anticholinergic effects. Unlike other drugs in its class, it is not used as an anti-psychotic.

Promethazine is a generic name for a class of antihistamine drugs used to prevent motion sickness, nausea, or vomiting; and for sedation, and the treatment of itching related to allergies. It is in the latter that we're interested in here, treating allergy symptoms and reactions with Promethazine, such as: nasal congestion, itching nose, clear runny nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, hives, and itchy skin rashes. Promethazine is used for treating localised allergies such as hay fever and nettle rash, as well more serious allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis.

Promethazine is used to prevent and treat nausea and vomiting. It may also be used to help you feel calmer before/after surgery or to help the meperidine work better. Caution is advised when using this drug in the elderly because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the drug, especially the drowsiness effect.

Promethazine is sometimes used for its sedative effects and in some countries is marketed for this purpose, including the sedation of young children. Promethazine is used as an anaesthetic premedication to produce sedation, reduce anxiety and also to reduce post operative nausea and vomiting. It is mostly used for different kind of allergies.
